President Donald Trump has appointed Erika Kirk, CEO of Turning Point USA, to the U.S. Air Force Academy’s Board of Visitors, according to official board records and White House statements released Saturday.
Kirk, 37, succeeds her late husband, Charlie Kirk, who served on the board until he was fatally shot during a speaking engagement at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025. The appointment places the prominent conservative leader in a critical oversight role for the nation’s premier aerospace military institution.
Oversight and Strategic Recommendations
The U.S. Air Force Academy Board of Visitors is a 16-seat body tasked with a broad investigative mandate. According to the board’s charter, members are required to “inquire into the morale, discipline, curriculum, instruction, physical equipment, fiscal affairs, academic methods,” and other matters the board deems relevant to the Academy’s mission.
The board provides formal recommendations to President Trump and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. Kirk is currently listed as one of five presidential appointees on the board, which also includes members selected by congressional leaders. One presidential appointment remains vacant.

White House and Congressional Support
White House spokesperson Olivia Wales described the move as a natural continuation of the administration’s goals for the military.
“President Trump made the perfect choice in appointing Erika Kirk,” Wales said in a statement. “Charlie Kirk served proudly on the board, inspiring millions with his defense of the truth and love of country. Erika Kirk will continue his legacy and be a fearless advocate for the most elite airpower force in the history of the world.”
The appointment also received strong backing from the board’s chairman, Representative August Pfluger (R-Texas). Pfluger noted that he actively encouraged the selection of Kirk to maintain the momentum established by her late husband.
“I applaud President Trump for this appointment,” Pfluger stated. “Erika is the right person to fill Charlie’s place and continue his work of inspiring the next generation of service members.”

Institutional Neutrality
While the appointment carries significant political weight, the U.S. Air Force Academy maintained a neutral stance, citing federal law regarding board selections.
“Under statute, the institution does not influence or take a position on the selection of individual Board of Visitors members,” an Academy spokesperson said. “Board appointments are made independently by the President of the United States and Congressional leaders.”

The Kirk Legacy
Erika Kirk’s entry into formal government oversight follows her transition to CEO of Turning Point USA (TPUSA), the influential conservative non-profit co-founded by Charlie Kirk. Since taking the helm after his death at age 31, Erika—a mother of two—has focused on maintaining the organization’s footprint on high school and college campuses.
Charlie Kirk was a pivotal figure in the MAGA movement, known for his “Prove Me Wrong” debates and aggressive advocacy for conservative values in education. His death last year sent shockwaves through the political landscape; this appointment signals the Trump administration’s intent to keep his influence embedded within federal advisory roles.
Turning Point USA has not yet issued a formal comment regarding the appointment.
