Three Mississippi teenagers are recovering from injuries today after a harrowing highway accident ended with their vehicle submerged in a canal. The rescue, described by witnesses as a spontaneous “community effort,” saw over a dozen motorists stop to pull the trapped siblings from the wreckage.

The victims—identified as Mariah, Michael, and Matthew Gill—were traveling along Interstate 10 when their vehicle reportedly veered off the road. According to eyewitness accounts, the car flipped three times before landing upside down in a drainage canal, quickly filling with water.

A Race Against Rising Water

J.D. Durant, who was traveling eastbound with his son, James, and coworker, Missy Pearson, witnessed the crash in real-time.

“When it started flipping like it did, I was afraid we were in for some hard times,” Durant told local reporters. The trio immediately pulled over, joined by approximately 15 other vehicles whose occupants rushed into the water to assist.

Mariah Gill, a senior at Bay High School, was behind the wheel at the time of the incident. She recounted the terrifying moments following the impact as water began to breach the cabin.

“I could hear my brothers screaming, ‘Water is coming in,’” Mariah said. “They got out, and I hear them saying, ‘My sister is still in there.’”

While the two younger brothers managed to escape the vehicle, Mariah remained trapped inside the totaled car until the group of bystanders successfully extracted her.

Investigation Into Second Vehicle

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but the Gill family has alleged that another vehicle was involved in the incident, potentially forcing the teenagers off the road.

The Harrison County Sheriff’s Department confirmed it had identified a “suspected vehicle” in connection with the crash. However, the case has since been transferred to the Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP) for further investigation. MHP has not yet released an official statement regarding potential charges or the identity of the other driver.

Recovery and Community Support

The siblings are currently focused on their physical recovery. Family friend Garside, who co-owns a local business with the children’s stepfather, has been providing public updates on their status.

A GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist with the family’s medical expenses and to replace the vehicle, which served as the siblings’ primary mode of transportation.
