A devastating four-alarm blaze tore through a residential building in Queens on Monday afternoon, claiming the lives of four people, including a three-year-old boy. The fire, fueled by high winds and resulting in a structural collapse, left several others injured and dozens displaced in the Flushing neighborhood.

The FDNY responded to the inferno at approximately 12:30 p.m. at a three-story building located on College Point Boulevard, between Avery and Pople avenues. Despite a rapid response, officials confirmed that three victims were discovered deceased inside the structure. A fourth victim succumbed to his injuries while being transported to a local hospital.

Firefighter Mayday and Structural Collapse

The intensity of the fire triggered a “mayday” call after a staircase collapsed inside the building while units were performing search and rescue operations. Two firefighters sustained minor injuries during the collapse; they were transported to a nearby hospital and are expected to recover.

FDNY Chief of Fire Operations Kevin Woods noted that environmental factors played a critical role in the fire’s rapid spread. “The wind definitely impacts firefighter operations,” Woods stated. “The fire travels with the wind.”

In total, approximately 230 fire and EMS personnel battled the flames for over two hours before the scene was brought under control.

Casualties and Condition of Survivors

While the identities of the deceased have not yet been released pending family notification, the NYPD confirmed the fatalities include:

  • One 3-year-old boy
  • One adult male
  • Two additional adults

Seven other residents were rescued and treated for various injuries. According to police reports, a 44-year-old man, a 59-year-old man, and a 67-year-old woman are currently in stable condition at Jacobi Hospital. Four other victims—ranging in age from 33 to 51—are being treated at New York-Presbyterian Queens, where they also remain in stable condition.

City Response and Investigation

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani addressed the tragedy in a statement late Monday, emphasizing the city’s commitment to the grieving families and the displaced residents.

“We’re mourning the loss of four New Yorkers after today’s devastating four-alarm fire in Flushing,” Mamdani said. “Residents have been displaced and the building suffered significant damage. Our city will stand with everyone affected as the Fire Marshal investigates the cause.”

The building has been declared uninhabitable due to extensive structural damage. The American Red Cross is reportedly on-site providing emergency housing and services to those who lost their homes.

The FDNY Bureau of Fire Investigation (BFI) is currently working to determine the origin and cause of the blaze. Investigators have not yet ruled out whether the building had functioning smoke detectors or if any safety violations contributed to the tragedy.
