The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and a private security firm are facing intense scrutiny following a physical altercation involving Oscar nominee Teyana Taylor at the conclusion of the 98th Academy Awards.

The incident, which occurred Sunday night at the Dolby Theatre, involved a member of Security Industry Specialists, Inc. (SIS) allegedly shoving the 35-year-old actress as guests were exiting the venue. The confrontation, captured in viral footage, has overshadowed a historic night for Taylor’s film, One Battle After Another, which took home six awards, including Best Picture.

“Do Not Shove Me”: The Confrontation Captured

Video circulated on X (formerly Twitter) shows an visibly distressed Taylor yelling at an individual off-camera. In the footage, Taylor is heard demanding respect after an alleged physical encounter.

“Because you’re a man putting your hands on a female! You’re very rude,” Taylor stated in the video. “He literally shoved me… Do not shove me. Do not touch me. Do not push me.”

Witnesses at the scene appeared to side with the actress, with one guest overheard calling the security guard’s actions “uncalled for.” Despite the heat of the moment, Taylor later attempted to de-escalate the narrative while speaking to reporters later that evening, attributing the friction to a security team “doing a lot.”

“I just don’t tolerate disrespect, especially when it’s unwarranted and it’s unprovoked,” Taylor told TMZ. “But everything’s fine. I’m happy.”

Security Firm and Academy Issue Formal Apologies

By Monday, the fallout prompted official responses from both the security contractor and the Academy. Security Industry Specialists, Inc. (SIS) confirmed the interaction, characterizing it as “incidental contact” during the management of a crowded area.

“This is not the standard of professionalism we expect from our team,” SIS said in a statement. “We have addressed the matter internally to help ensure situations like this do not happen again.”

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences issued a more pointed rebuke of the behavior, praising Taylor for the “remarkable grace” she displayed throughout the awards season.

“The experience of every single guest is our responsibility,” the Academy stated. “We have made it clear to [SIS] that this behavior is not acceptable… we are taking the appropriate measures to ensure this does not happen again.”

A Night of Triumph Amidst Tension

The incident stands in stark contrast to Taylor’s celebratory evening. Although the Best Supporting Actress trophy went to Amy Madigan (Weapons), Taylor remained a focal point of the ceremony. Her film, One Battle After Another, dominated the technical and major categories, including the Academy’s first-ever award for Best Casting.

Taylor, who won a Golden Globe for the role in January, appeared in high spirits at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party following the ceremony. When asked about her exuberant onstage celebration with director Paul Thomas Anderson, she joked about their “inside joke” involving a victory headlock.

Impact and Industry Implications The incident raises ongoing questions regarding the “heavy-handed” nature of event security at high-profile Hollywood galas. While the Academy has sought to move past the altercation by offering a public olive branch, the viral nature of the confrontation serves as a reminder of the volatile intersection between celebrity presence and aggressive crowd control protocols.
