Internal documents released by the Department of Justice have pulled back the curtain on a calculated, multi-year effort by Jeffrey Epstein to leverage Bill Gates’ private life for access to the billionaire’s inner circle. The files reveal that Epstein systematically funded the lifestyle of a Russian bridge player with whom Gates had an extramarital affair, later using those expenses to pressure the Microsoft co-founder for “reimbursement” and influence.
The correspondence, spanning from 2013 to 2019, paints a portrait of a master manipulator who utilized the “sanctity of friendship” as a rhetorical weapon. Epstein’s ultimate goal, according to investigators and editorial analysis, was to cement a permanent foothold within Gates’ global philanthropic and investment apparatus.
The Leverage: Mila Antonova
The focal point of Epstein’s pressure campaign was Mila Antonova, a Russian bridge player who met Gates at a tournament in 2009. According to legal representatives and subsequent admissions from Gates himself, the two maintained a relationship for a period around 2010.
As the relationship ended, Epstein stepped in to fill the financial void, effectively “warehousing” the connection for future use. DOJ documents show that between 2013 and 2018, Epstein:
- Orchestrated Visas: Worked with immigration attorneys to resolve Antonova’s status after she overstayed a crew visa.
- Funded Education: Paid for Antonova’s coding school and technical training.
- Provided Luxury Housing: Regularly housed her in his Upper East Side Manhattan apartments.
- Direct Cash Transfers: Wired thousands of dollars to entities controlled by Antonova for living expenses.
In an April 30, 2018, email to Larry Cohen—Gates’ then-chief of staff—Epstein issued a cryptic warning after placing Antonova in one of his New York residences: “Playing with fire.”
The Extortion Strategy
By 2017, as Gates began to distance himself from Epstein, the convicted sex offender pivoted to more aggressive tactics. He began demanding that Gates reimburse him for the years of support provided to Antonova.
In a July 2017 exchange with Cohen, Epstein quoted what he claimed were Gates’ own words regarding the bridge player: “If you can help push this out three years that should be enough.” Epstein argued that since the three-year mark had passed, the financial burden should return to Gates.
“I know you and Bill share my views on the sanctity of friendship,” Epstein wrote to Cohen, subtly reminding the office that he held potentially damaging information regarding the billionaire’s personal conduct.
Privately, Epstein expressed frustration at Gates’ “cold shoulder.” In emails to Boris Nikolic, Gates’ former science adviser, Epstein mocked Gates as “nuts” and “cheap,” suggesting that the story of the “richest man in the world” letting a former partner live on a friend’s sofa would “take Trump off the front pages.”
The “Melinda” Factor and Internal Collapse
The DOJ files also shed light on the internal friction caused by Epstein’s presence. Boris Nikolic, once a key bridge between the two men, saw his relationship with Gates collapse in 2013.
Internal emails suggest the rift began after Melinda French Gates became aware of the associations and the affair. In November 2013, Epstein responded to Nikolic’s professional fallout with a chillingly detached observation: “He [Gates] cries because he knows it is wrong. Not because he is sad.”
Nikolic, who has not been charged with any wrongdoing, recently stated he “deeply regrets” his association with Epstein, calling him a “master manipulator.”
The Final Ultimatum
Even as federal investigators closed in on his sex-trafficking ring in 2019, Epstein continued to press Gates. In January 2019, Epstein emailed Gates directly, stating, “I think at some point you want to reimburse me… I feel awkward asking.”
Days later, Epstein sent a more ominous message: “I hope you follow Bezos’ lead.” The comment was a direct reference to Jeff Bezos, whose extramarital affair had been made public by the National Enquirer just ten days prior, leading to his divorce.
Current Standing and Responses
A spokesperson for Bill Gates reiterated that the billionaire “regrets ever meeting with Epstein” and maintained that Gates never engaged in any illicit behavior. The spokesperson emphasized that the files prove Epstein’s relentless, unsolicited attempts to “insert himself into Gates’ life.”
While Gates has admitted to the affair in staff town halls, maintaining that it was a personal matter, the DOJ files suggest that for Jeffrey Epstein, the affair was never personal—it was a professional asset.
