Law enforcement officials in Oakland County are investigating the tragic death of a five-day-old girl who was killed Tuesday morning in what appears to be a sudden attack by a family dog. The incident, which occurred at a residence in the Oakland Glens mobile home park, has sent shockwaves through the suburban Detroit community.

Immediate Emergency Response

Novi police officers responded to a 911 call at approximately 8:30 a.m. on March 17. Upon arrival, first responders discovered the newborn unresponsive with visible puncture wounds. Despite immediate transport to a nearby hospital, medical staff were unable to revive the infant, and she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

“A family member reported finding the infant injured with puncture wounds,” stated Novi Police Commander Bob Manar. He confirmed that the nature of the injuries is “consistent with an animal attack.”

Family Account of the Tragedy

The infant’s grandmother, identified only as Ellyn, provided a harrowing account of the moments leading up to the fatality. Speaking with local news outlets, she relayed her son’s description of the event, stating that the dog—a mid-sized, mixed-breed animal—suddenly “snapped” in the presence of the family.

  • The Incident: The dog reportedly knocked over the infant’s bassinet before family members could intervene.
  • The History: According to the family, the dog had been raised around other children, who are now toddlers, without prior reports of aggression.
  • The Motivation: “He thinks the dog did it just to attack the baby,” Ellyn told FOX 2, noting the sudden and unpredictable nature of the shift in the animal’s behavior.

Ongoing Investigation and Public Safety

Oakland County Animal Control took custody of the dog immediately following the incident. The animal is currently being held in isolation pending the results of a formal investigation by both the Novi Police Department and the Oakland County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Authorities have not yet released the names of the parents or the specific breed of the dog. A determination regarding whether the animal will be euthanized will be made once the investigation is concluded and a cause of death is officially certified.

Safety and Prevention

Experts note that while rare, “predatory predatory” or territorial shifts can occur in household pets when a new infant is introduced to the environment. Child safety advocates recommend never leaving infants unattended with pets, regardless of the animal’s prior history with children.
