NEW YORK — Whoopi Goldberg is facing a wave of public backlash following controversial remarks on The View, where she suggested the ongoing U.S.-led military conflict in Iran is a coordinated “distraction” from the high-profile disappearance of Nancy Guthrie and the release of the Epstein files.

Goldberg, 70, drew immediate criticism from viewers and political analysts for linking a major geopolitical crisis to the six-week-old missing person case involving the 84-year-old mother of TODAY co-anchor Savannah Guthrie.

During a Tuesday panel discussion regarding the surge in global oil prices and the U.S. military’s “Operation Roaring Lion,” Goldberg questioned the timing of the conflict.

“It’s nutty as hell,” Goldberg stated. “Why haven’t we been talking about Savannah Guthrie and what’s been going on there? Why have we not been talking about the Epstein files? Because that’s still there. This is meant to get us so worked up that we are unable to see anything else.”

The comments come as the Trump administration signals a potential “winding down” of hostilities that began on February 28, 2026, following joint U.S.-Israeli airstrikes in Tehran.

The reaction across digital platforms was swift and largely condemnatory. Critics accused the Oscar-winning actress of trivializing a violent international conflict and a sensitive criminal investigation.

“To claim a full-scale war is a cover-up for a kidnapping is beyond the pale,” wrote one user on X. Others described the theory as “ludicrous” and “devoid of common sense,” pointing to the logistical impossibility of orchestrating a multi-national military campaign to divert attention from a domestic missing person case.

Fact-Checking the Context

While Goldberg’s comments sparked a firestorm, the cases she referenced remain active:

  • The Nancy Guthrie Case: Nancy Guthrie vanished from her Tucson home on February 1, 2026. The FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department have labeled the disappearance a “violent abduction” after discovering blood evidence at the scene.
  • The Iran War: The conflict has resulted in thousands of casualties and the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, causing a global energy crisis.
  • Epstein Files: Federal authorities have continued the staggered release of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein’s associates throughout early 2026, though no direct link to the current military engagement has been established by credible intelligence.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Office, which has faced its own scrutiny over the Guthrie investigation, has not commented on Goldberg’s remarks. Savannah Guthrie remains on an indefinite leave of absence from NBC News as the search for her mother continues.
