In a dramatic expansion of the ongoing 2026 Iran War, Tehran launched two intermediate-range ballistic missiles (IRBMs) at the strategic U.S.-U.K. military base on Diego Garcia early Saturday. The attempted strike, targeting a facility nearly 2,500 miles (4,000 km) from Iranian territory, shatters previous Western intelligence assessments regarding the Islamic Republic’s operational reach.

Trump listed the primary U.S. objectives as:

However, the attempt on Diego Garcia suggests that despite the reported death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in the war’s opening days, significant “pockets of advanced capability” remain active.

With Iran demonstrating a 4,000 km reach, the sanctuary previously enjoyed by Western staging grounds in the Indian Ocean has evaporated.
