“Options on the Table”: White House Sparks Panic Over Potential Military Draft as Iran War Enters Week 4

The Trump administration is facing a firestorm of criticism following a refusal to rule out the reinstatement of the military draft as the 2026 Iran War enters its fourth week. While President Donald Trump suggested on Friday that the U.S. is “winding down” major operations, the looming possibility of conscription has sparked warnings of a “generational political realignment” and widespread civil unrest.

The controversy intensified after White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt addressed the prospect of a draft during a recent briefing. While clarifying that a draft is “not part of the current plan,” Leavitt pointedly noted that the President “wisely keeps his options on the table” as the administration assesses the success of Operation Epic Fury.

This ambiguity has triggered alarm among military analysts and political strategists. Investigative journalist Chauncey DeVega warned in Salon that any move toward a draft would likely backfire on the MAGA coalition. DeVega argued that a ground invasion intended to secure Iranian oil supplies or remove leadership could permanently damage America’s superpower standing.

“As a political matter, a draft for an already unpopular war would likely leave Americans outraged,” DeVega noted, predicting that such a move would ensure landslide victories for Democrats in the upcoming midterms.

The U.S. has not seen a military draft since 1973. While the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) recently implemented “automatic” registration for the Selective Service, actually activating the draft requires an Act of Congress.

Steven Cash, Director of Steady State, echoed the sentiment that a draft is only plausible when a nation faces an existential threat. “At that point, the question would no longer be political convenience, but national survival,” Cash stated.

Despite reported support for mandatory enlistment among some segments of the MAGA base, prominent Republicans are breaking ranks. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) voiced a fierce dissent on X (formerly Twitter), citing her campaign promises against “regime change” and “foreign wars.”

“How about the answer is NO DRAFT… not my son, over my dead body!” Greene wrote, highlighting a growing rift within the party.

As of March 21, 2026, the human cost of the conflict is rising. Reports indicate at least 13 U.S. service members have been killed, while Iranian casualties have surpassed 1,300. Although the administration claims to have degraded 90% of Iran’s missile capabilities, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz continues to destabilize global energy markets.

With the 2026 midterms approaching, the administration’s handling of manpower needs remains a high-stakes gamble that could redefine the Republican party for a generation.
