A 5-year-old girl is dead and her 8-year-old brother remains in critical condition following a shooting involving an unsecured firearm at a rural Kansas residence. Preliminary reports from the Ellsworth County Sheriff’s Office indicate that another young child discharged a loaded shotgun on Saturday afternoon.
Emergency personnel responded to a 911 call at approximately 3:15 p.m. on March 28. The incident occurred at a home south of the intersection of Kansas Highway 141 and Ave. N in Brookville.
First responders, including Ellsworth County deputies, Kansas Highway Patrol troopers, and Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks wardens, discovered two children with severe gunshot wounds. Despite immediate life-saving efforts at the scene, the 5-year-old girl succumbed to her injuries.
The 8-year-old male victim was stabilized and airlifted to a hospital in Wichita. Authorities confirmed he remains in critical condition as of Thursday.
Initial findings suggest the tragedy occurred after a young child—whose specific age and identity officials have withheld—located a loaded and unsecured shotgun within the home. The child allegedly fired the weapon, striking both siblings.
The Ellsworth County Sheriff’s Office has declined to release additional details regarding the presence of adults in the home or the specific type of shotgun used, citing the sensitivity of the active investigation.
“The findings of this investigation will be presented to the Ellsworth County Attorney’s Office for review upon completion,” the Sheriff’s Office stated.
This incident underscores the catastrophic risks of improper firearm storage. While Kansas law regarding criminal liability for such incidents remains a focal point for the County Attorney, the primary focus of the sheriff’s department is currently on forensic evidence and witness statements from the scene.
Authorities have not yet announced whether any charges will be filed against the owners of the firearm.
