Pope Leo XIV, the first American to lead the Catholic Church, is unlikely to visit his home country during the remainder of the Trump administration, according to high-level Vatican sources. The diplomatic rift follows a contentious Pentagon meeting that officials describe as a turning point in Holy See-U.S. relations.

The breakdown in communication reportedly stems from a January meeting at the Pentagon involving Cardinal Christophe Pierre, then the Pope’s personal representative to the U.S. Vatican officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, characterized the encounter as a “bitter lecture.”

Sources claim U.S. defense officials warned the Church to align with American interests, asserting that the United States possesses the military mandate to act unilaterally. While a Pentagon spokesperson dismissed these claims to PEOPLE as “highly exaggerated and distorted,” describing the dialogue as “respectful and reasonable,” the sentiment within the Apostolic Palace remains one of deep caution.

In a symbolic move that underscores the cooling ties, Pope Leo XIV reportedly declined an invitation from Vice President JD Vance to celebrate the United States’ 250th anniversary at the White House this July 4.

Instead of traveling to Washington, the Pontiff will visit Lampedusa, the Italian island serving as a primary gateway for North African migrants. The choice is being viewed by diplomatic analysts as a pointed rebuttal of the administration’s current border and immigration stances.

At the heart of the friction is a fundamental disagreement over global governance. During his annual address to the diplomatic corps, Pope Leo XIV championed international humanitarian law and warned against a “diplomacy based on force.”

Vatican insiders suggest the speech was a calculated critique of the “Donroe Doctrine,” President Trump’s updated version of the Monroe Doctrine, which emphasizes U.S. hegemony over the Western Hemisphere. The Pope’s advocacy for multilateralism stands in direct opposition to the administration’s “America First” geopolitical framework.

The White House has remained largely tight-lipped regarding the perceived snub. When questioned on April 8 about the Pentagon’s meeting with Cardinal Pierre, Vice President Vance initially claimed unfamiliarity with the Cardinal before declining further comment.

As the Holy See pivots its focus toward Mediterranean humanitarian issues, the prospect of a papal homecoming for the first American Pope appears increasingly remote, marking a historic low in modern Vatican-U.S. diplomacy.
