Boy, 7, Was Allegedly Locked in a Van by Father ‘to Protect Him.’ Over a Year Later, the Child Is Malnourished and Unable to Walk

A nine-year-old boy is recovering under medical supervision after French authorities discovered him living in a trash-filled utility van, where he had allegedly been held captive by his father for over a year.

The rescue occurred on Monday, April 6, in the village of Hagenbach, located near the borders of Switzerland and Germany. Acting on reports from a neighbor who heard “sounds of a child” emanating from a parked vehicle, police forced entry into the van. Inside, officers discovered the child naked and huddled in a fetal position atop a mound of refuse and human excrement.

The French Ministry of Justice reports that the boy’s father admitted to concealing the child in the vehicle in November 2024. The father allegedly claimed the action was necessary to “protect” his son from his stepmother, whom he suspected of wanting to commit the boy to a psychiatric institution.

However, investigative findings contradict this narrative. Prior to his disappearance, the child was reportedly a high-performing student with no documented history of psychiatric illness.

The victim told investigators that while his father provided food and water twice daily, he was forced to urinate and defecate in plastic bottles and trash bags. Officials confirmed the child was severely malnourished and had not bathed since late 2024. Despite the trauma, the boy echoed his father’s sentiment during initial questioning, telling authorities he believed his father “had no choice” but to lock him away due to conflict with the stepmother.

The father now faces multiple felony charges, including:

• Abduction and arbitrary detention of a minor under 15.
• Deprivation of care or food endangering the health of a minor.

The stepmother, who claimed she was unaware the boy was being kept in the vehicle outside their home, has been charged with non-assistance to a minor in danger and failure to report mistreatment. She remains free on conditional bail.

The disappearance went largely unnoticed by the community because the couple allegedly told friends and relatives the boy had been placed in a psychiatric facility. Village residents expressed profound shock to the Associated Press, stating they were entirely unaware of the child’s presence in the parked van.

The couple’s two other children, aged 10 and 12, have been removed from the home and placed in the care of social services. The prosecutor’s office is continuing its investigation to determine if any other parties were complicit in the concealment.
