Elon Musk has officially announced the formation of a new political party — the America Party — following his ongoing criticism of both major U.S. political parties.

On Saturday, July 5, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO declared the creation of the party on his social platform X (formerly Twitter), one day after posting a viral poll asking users if they supported breaking away from the current two-party system.

“Independence Day is the perfect time to ask if you want independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system! Should we create the America Party?” Musk asked in the July 4 poll. Over 1.2 million people voted, with 65.4% answering “yes.”

Responding to the result the next day, Musk wrote:

“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it! When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”

He also reposted a meme depicting a two-headed snake, representing Democrats and Republicans, with the caption: “End the Uniparty.” Musk replied simply: “Yes.”

Musk’s decision to move forward came after he publicly condemned former President Donald Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill” — a sweeping spending proposal passed by the GOP-controlled Congress. On June 30, Musk threatened to launch a new political movement if the bill became law.

“If this insane spending bill passes, the America Party will be formed the next day,” he posted. “Our country needs an alternative to the Democrat-Republican uniparty so that the people actually have a VOICE.”

The move marks a dramatic shift in Musk’s relationship with Trump, who had previously appointed the billionaire to lead the Department of Government Efficiency in early 2025. That role put Musk at the center of Trump’s cost-cutting agenda, which included deep staffing cuts and the closure of several federal agencies.

However, the alliance soured quickly. Musk left the administration on May 30 and began publicly criticizing the very policies he once helped shape, calling the new legislation a betrayal of their original goals.

Their falling-out erupted on social media on June 5, with both men trading personal jabs. That same day, Musk also polled X users about whether it was time to form a new political party representing “the 80% in the middle.”

Now, just a month later, Musk has made it official — positioning the America Party as an alternative to what he calls the entrenched, self-serving establishment in Washington.
