A 28-year-old mother says her pleas for help were dismissed as “just heartburn” during multiple visits to doctors—until she was hit with a devastating diagnosis: incurable stomach cancer and just 12 months to live.

Georgia Gardiner, from Leeds, began experiencing sudden stomach cramps and persistent nausea in the summer of 2024. Despite her worsening condition, including rapid weight loss of nearly 42 pounds, she claims doctors sent her home time and again with acid reflux medication.

“I kept going back to them—six to nine times,” she said. “But each time, I was told it was heartburn and to keep taking the medication. My body was rejecting everything. I couldn’t eat, I couldn’t keep anything down. I love food, and suddenly I just couldn’t enjoy it at all.”

Georgia’s condition deteriorated over several months. Desperate for answers, she was finally referred for an endoscopy via a non-specific symptoms pathway—leading to the discovery that she was suffering from linitis plastica, a rare and aggressive form of stomach cancer. By then, it had already spread to her lymph nodes and other organs.

“I was feeling so unwell last summer and nothing made sense,” Georgia said. “After everything, I was told I might have a year left.”

Photos show the young mom with her fiancé, Callum, and their two-year-old son Arlo—now at the center of Georgia’s strength as she prepares for the fight of her life. Though the cancer is incurable, she’s committed to doing everything she can to slow its progression and create lasting memories with her family.

“We thought it might be something they could remove at first,” she said. “I had just gotten into a business management course. Everything was coming together. Then everything fell apart.”

Georgia’s family recalls countless appointments and emergency visits leading up to the diagnosis, saying they repeatedly pushed for answers. Now, the goal is to maintain her quality of life for as long as possible.

Despite the grim prognosis, Georgia remains determined. “I’m going to fight this in every way I can,” she said. “For Arlo. For all the moments I still have left.”
