President Donald Trump lashed out at former ally Elon Musk on Sunday, ridiculing the billionaire’s plans to launch a third political party and accusing him of acting out over a key provision in the recently passed “Big Beautiful Bill.”
Posting on Truth Social, Trump called the Tesla and SpaceX CEO a “train wreck” who had “gone completely off the rails,” following Musk’s announcement of the new “America Party,” a political movement aimed at challenging the Republican-Democrat duopoly.
“I am saddened to watch Elon Musk go completely ‘off the rails,’ essentially becoming a TRAIN WRECK over the past five weeks,” Trump wrote. “He even wants to start a Third Political Party, despite the fact that they have never succeeded in the United States — the system just isn’t designed for them.”
Trump: Musk Upset Over EV Mandate Removal
According to Trump, Musk’s frustration stems from the elimination of the federal Electric Vehicle (EV) Mandate—a change included in the sweeping legislation signed into law last week. The mandate’s removal effectively strips Tesla of key green-energy credits that have long benefited the automaker.
“Unfortunately for Elon, the bill eliminates the ridiculous Electric Vehicle (EV) Mandate, which would have forced everyone to buy an Electric Car in a short period of time,” Trump said. “Republicans, on the other hand, are a smooth-running machine that just passed the biggest bill of its kind in our country’s history.”
Trump also claimed that Musk had previously supported this policy change.
“When Elon gave me his total and unquestioned endorsement, I asked if he realized I was going to terminate the EV Mandate — it was in every speech I gave. He said he had no problem with that. I was very surprised!”
NASA, DOGE, and Personal Tensions
The president further alleged that Musk had lobbied to have one of his personal allies appointed to lead NASA—a request Trump said he rejected after learning the candidate was a “blue-blooded Democrat.”
This latest clash follows a public unraveling of the Trump-Musk alliance in June, after Musk exited DOGE (the Department of Government Efficiency initiative) and criticized Trump’s tax bill. Since then, the two have exchanged barbs across social media and public forums.
Trump has also hinted at retaliatory action, including threats to pull federal funding from Tesla and SpaceX contracts.
“We’ve got enough chaos in Washington from the Radical Left,” Trump said. “We don’t need Elon adding more with his vanity party and political stunts.”
As the feud between the two powerhouses escalates, so does the uncertainty surrounding the future of the America Party — and whether Musk’s political ambitions will gain traction beyond his online following.
