A 23-year-old man has been charged in connection with a fatal crash that claimed the life of four-year-old Mayar Yahia in Birmingham last year, West Midlands Police confirmed.
Mayar was struck by a car on Upper Highgate Street on April 14, 2023. Despite emergency services rushing to the scene, she sadly died from her injuries. Three others were injured in the incident, though their injuries were not life-threatening.
The driver, Javonnie Tavener, now faces multiple charges, including causing death by careless driving, causing death while driving uninsured, and two counts of causing serious injury by careless driving.
Tavener appeared before Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday and has been remanded in custody. He is due to appear at Birmingham Crown Court on July 30.
In a tribute issued last year through police, Mayar’s father, Babiker, described her as “an extraordinary young girl.”
