The political world was already shaken when Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York’s Democratic mayoral primary—but the real shock came when Donald Trump publicly threatened him.

During a press appearance at Florida’s controversial “Alligator Alcatraz” detention center, the former president lashed out at Mamdani for vowing to block ICE raids in New York City. “Well, then we’ll have to arrest him,” Trump said. “We don’t need a communist in this country, but if we have one, I’m going to be watching over him very carefully.” He also warned in a separate Fox News interview that if Mamdani wins and doesn’t “do the right thing,” New York could face cuts in federal funding.

Mamdani Fires Back

Mamdani responded forcefully on X (formerly Twitter), accusing Trump of crossing a dangerous line:

“The President of the United States just threatened to have me arrested, stripped of my citizenship, put in a detention camp, and deported. His statements don’t just represent an attack on our democracy but are meant to send a message to every New Yorker who refuses to live in fear: speak up, and they’ll come for you. We will not accept this intimidation.”

Social Media Explodes in Support of Mamdani

The response across social media was swift and fierce, with many users calling out Trump for his rhetoric and rallying around Mamdani.

“Zohran Mamdani’s response is spot on—he’s focused on real issues instead of getting dragged into Trump’s chaos,” wrote one TikTok user.

“Donald Trump is deranged. He doesn’t know right from wrong,” another said. “He spews hate because it’s all he has left.”

“NYC voters just saved democracy,” one person declared. “Elect Mamdani!”

“So a felon can be president, but Mamdani gets threats for running for mayor?” another asked. “Trump should take his own advice. He’s the criminal.”

“Trump is a sick man,” one user posted bluntly. “Respect to Zohran Mamdani for standing his ground.”

With Trump’s comments continuing to dominate headlines, Mamdani’s campaign appears to have become a national lightning rod—not just for New York politics, but for the broader fight over democracy, immigration, and who gets to lead.
