U.S. President Donald Trump has called for the swift deportation of undocumented immigrants following a violent incident in New York City where an off-duty U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer was shot in the face and arm during an attempted robbery.
In a fiery post on Truth Social on Sunday, Trump blamed the Biden administration’s immigration policies for the attack, claiming the suspect—a 21-year-old undocumented immigrant named Miguel Mora—had previously been apprehended at the U.S.-Mexico border in April 2023 but was released instead of being deported.
“Last night, in New York City, an incredible CBP Officer was shot in the face by an Illegal Alien Monster freed into the Country under Joe Biden,” Trump wrote. “The CBP Officer bravely fought off his attacker, despite his wounds, demonstrating enormous skill and courage. The Democrats have flooded our Nation with criminal invaders, and now, they must all be thrown out—or immediately prosecuted—because we can’t risk them coming back.”
The officer, whose name has not been publicly released, was in stable condition as of Sunday and is expected to survive, according to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch. Police say the off-duty officer was sitting with a woman in a park under the George Washington Bridge shortly before midnight when two men on a moped approached. One of them attempted a robbery, prompting the officer to draw his service weapon. A gunfight followed, during which the officer was shot in the face and arm.
The suspected gunman, later identified as Miguel Mora, was wounded in the groin and leg and turned up at a Bronx hospital, where he was taken into custody. Tisch said Mora’s injuries matched surveillance footage from the scene. Mora reportedly has a criminal history, including two prior arrests for domestic violence in New York and active warrants in both New York and Massachusetts for robbery, assault, and weapons charges.
The search for a second suspect, believed to be the moped driver, was ongoing as of Sunday evening.
The incident has reignited debate over immigration policy, with Trump urging the Supreme Court to intervene and allow for expedited deportations. His administration has recently revived a push for mass deportations, which has sparked tensions and warnings from federal agencies about rising risks to law enforcement.
“Illegal immigrants with violent records are roaming freely under Biden’s watch,” Trump said in a separate post. “This must end now. Our officers—and our citizens—deserve protection, not betrayal.”
