Singapore now holds the title for the world’s most powerful passport, offering its citizens visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 193 destinations, according to the latest Henley Passport Index released on July 22. The index, compiled using exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), places the city-state ahead of major players like the United States and the United Kingdom.

While Singapore remains firmly at the top, its total dropped slightly from last year after Pakistan and Mauritania transitioned to e-visa systems, removing them from the visa-on-arrival category.

Asian and European Passports Lead the Way

Asian nations dominate the upper ranks. Japan and South Korea are tied for second place with access to 190 destinations. Germany, France, and Spain lead Europe’s strong showing, joining four other EU countries in third place with visa-free access to 189 destinations. New Zealand, at 5th place, is the only non-European or non-Asian nation in the top five.

At the bottom of the list, Afghanistan holds the least powerful passport, allowing visa-free travel to just 25 countries.

India Moves Up, US and UK Decline

India made a significant leap this year, jumping eight places to 77th, despite offering visa-free access to just 59 countries. Saudi Arabia also climbed the rankings, landing at 54th after gaining four more destinations.

Meanwhile, the United States and the UK continue to slide. The UK now ranks 6th with access to 186 destinations, while the US drops to 10th—its lowest position since the index began—with 182 destinations.

Big Movers: UAE and China

The United Arab Emirates marked the largest leap in a decade, soaring 34 spots to 8th place, now providing visa-free access to 186 countries. China made a similar rise and now ranks 60th, up from below 70th just a few years ago. Its citizens now enjoy visa-free access to 75 countries, a dramatic increase from fewer than 20 a decade ago. Recent additions include all GCC nations and several South American countries.

  • US rank: 10th (182 destinations)
  • UK rank: 6th (186 destinations)
