Jonathan Andic, the son of Isak Andic, founder of global fashion retailer Mango, is reportedly under investigation following his father’s death in December 2024.

Isak, 71, died on December 14, 2024, after what was described at the time as an accident, according to a statement released by Mango CEO Toni Ruiz.

According to The Times, Isak had been hiking with his eldest son Jonathan, 44, in the Montserrat mountains near Barcelona when he fell more than 320 feet to his death. The pair were walking along the Les Feixades trail, a well-known route popular with families, when the tragedy occurred.

Reports state that Jonathan, who was walking slightly ahead, heard rocks tumbling behind him and turned around to see his father fall from an unfenced section of the path. The route connects the Salnitre caves in Collbató to the Montserrat monastery and spans roughly three miles.

Authorities initially treated the incident as an accident. However, according to El Periódico and The Times, inconsistencies in Jonathan’s statements have prompted a judicial review. Spanish newspaper El País reported that the case has shifted focus—from a mountain accident to a possible homicide investigation. Jonathan’s status has also reportedly changed from witness to suspect.

The Mossos d’Esquadra, Catalonia’s regional police, are said to be examining new evidence, including data from Jonathan’s mobile phone. Despite the review, police sources told El País that the main working theory remains accidental, with no conclusive evidence pointing otherwise.

In a statement shared through Reuters, representatives for the Andic family said:

“The Andic family has not commented, and will not comment, on Isak Andic’s death. It wishes to show respect for the ongoing proceedings and will continue co-operating fully with the authorities. The family is confident that this process will end soon and that Jonathan Andic’s innocence will be proven.”

Jonathan currently serves as Vice-Chairman of the Board for Mango Fashion Group, according to the company’s website. A company spokesperson has not publicly commented on the investigation.

In his earlier statement, CEO Toni Ruiz expressed deep sorrow over Isak’s death, writing:

“It is with deep regret that we announce the unexpected death of Isak Andic, our non-executive chairman and founder of Mango, in an accident that occurred this Saturday. Isak has been an example for all of us. He dedicated his life to Mango, leaving an indelible mark thanks to his strategic vision, inspiring leadership, and unwavering commitment to values that shaped our company.”

Ruiz added that Andic’s passing “leaves a huge void,” but emphasized that the company remains committed to his vision:

“It is up to us, and this is the best tribute we can make to Isak, to ensure that Mango continues to be the project he aspired to and would be proud of. In these extremely difficult times, we share the pain of the family as if it were our own.”

At the time of his death, Forbes estimated Isak Andic’s net worth at approximately $4.5 billion. He founded Mango in Barcelona in 1984, and the brand has since grown into an international fashion powerhouse.

As of early 2025, Mango operates more than 2,900 stores worldwide and reported a 12% increase in sales in the first half of the year, along with the opening of 78 new locations.
