A former New York City restaurant owner is “heartbroken” after being charged in connection with a golf cart crash in Florida late last month that left his wife dead, his attorney says.

Angelo Theodosiou was arrested and charged with DUI after a Nov. 30 incident that claimed the life of his wife, Christina Theodosiou. According to local reports from Action News Jax, the St. Johns Citizen and WFOX, Christina fell from the moving golf cart and struck her head on the ground.

“All I can say at this point is that my client is heartbroken and that his family continues to stand behind him in this troubling time,” attorney L. Lee Lockett said on Monday, as his 64-year-old client faces a criminal charge tied to his 58-year-old wife’s death.

“He’s distraught,” Lockett also told the St. Johns Citizen. “He’s depressed as can be.”

The attorney said that Theodosiou’s son has told him the family is standing by Angelo despite the charges.

According to Action News Jax, the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office reported that Angelo’s eyes appeared bloodshot and that he smelled strongly of alcohol at the time of his arrest. Authorities also allege he refused to take a breathalyzer test at the scene.

“He was pacing around,” neighbor Christopher Barnes told the outlet.

“You shouldn’t be drinking and driving,” another neighbor, Yariela Farkas, said to Action News Jax. “It’s still a vehicle, and it’s still dangerous.”

Taylor Levesque, a spokesperson for the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office, declined to comment on the specifics of the case or provide further details.

Lockett, who represents Theodosiou — a former restaurant owner from Jackson Heights, Queens — said the case remains in the discovery phase and that his office is “still awaiting most of the investigative information.”

He similarly told the St. Johns Citizen: “My client maintains his innocence and we’re looking forward to receiving the evidence.”

According to the outlet, Christina died after being airlifted to a local hospital with head injuries sustained when she struck the concrete during the crash. Her obituary drew dozens of tributes from friends and family, who shared memories and photos of Christina, her husband, and their loved ones.

“He didn’t cause the accident,” Lockett reiterated in his statement to the St. Johns Citizen. “He was not impaired.”

A family friend who spoke with the outlet added: “They are both wonderful, wonderful people. They retired here and were really happy. It’s just terrible, it’s unbelievable.”
