Sailor, a 6-month-old golden retriever, has one of the most unique jobs at sea. She was recently named the Chief Dog Officer of the Star of the Seas, Royal Caribbean’s newest ship and one of the biggest cruise ships in the world.

The ship features record-breaking waterslides, seven pools, and more than 40 options for dining, drinks, and entertainment. Now, with Sailor on board, guests and crew also have a furry friend to brighten their days.

The role of Chief Dog Officer first appeared on Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas with a pup named Rover. Sailor is following in Rover’s paw prints, and he even helped her get used to cruise life, as shown in Royal Caribbean’s Sailor sneak peek video.

“When guests go on vacation, one of the main things they miss is their pets back home. And when our crew is away for months, they miss their pets too,” explained Jay Rosser, a senior manager at Royal Caribbean, in the video.

To make sure Sailor and Rover are happy and healthy, the company worked with animal wellness experts while creating the Chief Dog Officer program. Sailor also spent months in obedience and socialization training before she stepped onto the ship.

Sailor began her career in August, joining the Star of the Seas on its first voyage out of Port Canaveral, Florida. Her handler and “chief of staff,” Vicky Keeley Smith, says working with Sailor is a dream job.

“Whether we are greeting guests, visiting crew, or exploring her new home on Star, she has such a sweet disposition and brings so much joy to everyone she meets,” Smith told PEOPLE.

Sailor even has her own special bed on the bridge, where she naps with an ocean view. When she isn’t resting, she spends time with Smith, following a mix of routine and adventure.

Her mornings usually begin with a walk on the crew deck, breakfast, and some play or training time. Later, she and Smith explore the ship, often visiting the kids’ club Adventure Ocean or walking along the Royal Promenade.

Smith says that although Sailor’s job has started, training continues. At her age, dogs often become more independent, so the focus now is making sure she feels comfortable in different ship environments while reinforcing her training.

“She’s friendly, playful, and curious,” Smith said. “People love to cuddle her, take pictures, and share stories about their own pets. Meeting Sailor is often a highlight of their day.”

According to Smith, Sailor is already a star on board, winning over both crew and vacationers with her affectionate nature.
