A viral TikTok is reminding viewers what it really looks like to welcome someone into the family with open arms.

The clip captures a quietly powerful moment: a groom-to-be asking his fiancée’s mother to share the mother-son dance at his wedding, turning a long-standing tradition into a story about belonging, grief, and love.

In the video’s real-life scene, Anna Meredith sits in the kitchen with her fiancé, William Smith, and her mother, Kate Meredith. The room is buzzing with wedding talk and chatter from Anna’s sisters when William finally decides the moment has come.

“He had wanted to ask her a couple times before that,” Anna recalls. “He kept thinking, ‘Should I do it today? No, I’m not gonna do it today.’”

That ordinary kitchen—full of voices and planning—ended up becoming the backdrop for a moment that would touch millions of strangers online.

William says the idea had been on his heart for a long time. “I’ve been thinking about it since we were engaged,” he explains. His mom died right around the time he started dating Anna, and the loss reshaped how he viewed the wedding day.

For him, the dance is more than a sweet gesture; it’s a way to honor the mother he lost through the family he’s gained. “It just felt right,” he says, his voice carrying both gratitude and grief.

Kate, who raised five daughters and never had the chance to meet William’s mom, was deeply moved. “Honestly, I was very touched,” she says. “I never got a chance to meet Will’s mom, but over the past few months—doing wedding things, getting to meet more of Will’s family, hearing stories about her—it really meant a lot to me, because he’s such a great, great kid.”

Her voice still softens when she thinks about it. “It really was just so special,” she adds, emotion catching in her throat as she remembers his quiet, heartfelt request.

For Kate, the dance isn’t just symbolic—it’s a widening of the circle. “I have five daughters, and so this is our first chance to have a son,” she says. “It’s our first chance for the girls to have a brother. The more people that get to be part of the family, the better. Now we get Will to officially be part of the family.”

Anna has watched that bond grow over the years as William naturally slipped into their family’s rhythm. She laughs when she talks about how at home he is. “He does the dishes, please,” she jokes. “He lived with us for a while, and my sisters literally climb all over him. He’s just part of it all.”

When she decided to film the TikTok, Anna says she knew she was about to capture something rare for William. “Will is not, like, a super emotional person,” she explains. “So I knew this was going to be an emotional moment. My first thought was, ‘I need to capture this. I really want to be able to look back and think, wow, this is actually happening.’”

That instinct proved right. The video—captioned “‘late night finds’ but it’s my fiancé asking my mom to dance the mother son dance with him at our wedding”—has prompted thousands of viewers to reflect on their own families and traditions.

“A lot of the comments were emotional, reflecting on their own families, wishing they had that,” Anna says. “It really puts into perspective how lucky I am to have that bond.”

Her gratitude isn’t just for the moment online; it’s for the everyday reality behind it. “Will is just… he’s always around,” she says. “I’m the oldest of five girls. The youngest sisters are 11 and 13 now, but when they met Will, they were two and four. So they’ve really grown up with him, and he’s grown up with them too. He’s always there—he’s everywhere.”

The couple’s story goes back to 2017, when they both worked at a grocery store. “We were just kids then,” Anna says with a smile. “We became best friends first, and then it just grew from there.”

Their relationship has since weathered big life changes together. During the pandemic, they ended up living with the Meredith family for an extended period. “We spent almost all of Covid together,” William recalls. “We moved into a bigger house, and I always looked at Kate as another mom.”

Those months, which could have felt claustrophobic, instead deepened their sense of family—board games, shared dinners, and movie nights stacking up into years of memories. That same closeness is what eventually gave rise to the tender moment the world would later watch on their phones.

Kate laughs about how the video took on a life of its own. “People would come up to me like, ‘Oh, you’re that mom from that video,’” she says. “I had people telling me about it before I even got to watch it myself. Will’s just so cute—any video with Will does so much better than if it’s just me. Luckily, he’s part of all of this.”

For her, the attention has been surreal, but also affirming. “We’ve always believed family is what you make it,” she says. “The love you give out always finds its way back.”

Family, for Kate, has always meant a full house. “My husband’s one of five, I’m one of eight. We started our family very early, and we have five of our own,” she shares with a laugh. “A small party might be 40 people, and that’s just one side. The family just got bigger. The love has grown. Hopefully someday, we’ll be blessed with the next generation. I’m excited about all that’s to come.”

As Anna and William’s wedding day nears, everyone is already picturing the dance that started it all. “It’s going to be emotional,” Anna admits. “But that’s what makes it beautiful. It’s not just about tradition—it’s about love showing up in new ways.”

For William, the moment will be both a tribute and a promise. “I think my mom would be really happy about it,” he says quietly. “She’d love Kate. They’d probably be best friends.”

Anna smiles as he says it, her eyes bright. “It’s really important to have the people that mean the most to you really close,” she says. “It doesn’t matter if it’s by blood or not.”
