Alejandro Orellana, 29, who gained attention after being seen on live television handing out protective gear to protesters during recent anti-ICE demonstrations in Los Angeles, was indicted Wednesday by a federal grand jury.
Orellana faces charges of conspiracy to aid and abet civil disorders.
According to federal prosecutors, on June 9, Orellana met with others to load his Ford F-150 pickup truck with Uvex Bionic Face Shields, masks, water bottles, and other supplies. He then delivered these items to a group of protesters amid ongoing unrest in the city.
U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli emphasized the Justice Department’s focus on identifying and apprehending individuals involved in organizing or supporting the riots. “These appear to be well-coordinated and well-funded efforts,” he said at the time of Orellana’s arrest on June 12.
Orellana is allegedly connected to the activist group CENTRO CSO, which is raising funds for his legal defense and planning a protest to demand the charges against him be dropped. The group stated on Instagram: “Orellana is facing 5 years for protesting ICE raids. Protesting is not a crime! Alejandro did nothing wrong!”
Meanwhile, local authorities have charged over 40 individuals linked to violent incidents during the anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles last month. These charges followed clashes that erupted amid the Trump administration’s intensified deportation efforts targeting criminal undocumented immigrants.
