An American tourist was killed and another seriously injured during a knife attack early Wednesday in the seaside town of Cascais, Portugal — located about 20 miles west of Lisbon — according to CNN and Fox News.
Authorities said one of the victims was walking back to his hotel around 3:15 a.m. local time on Oct. 15 when three men attempted to rob him. When he resisted, the suspects attacked. His friend, who tried to intervene, was also assaulted.
Police confirmed that one of the tourists died at the scene while the other sustained severe injuries.
“One of the tourists died at the scene and the other suffered serious injuries to the face and arm,” a Portuguese police spokesperson told AFP, per Barron’s.

Reuters footage obtained by Fox News appeared to show bloodstains on the sidewalk where the attack occurred. Despite efforts by first responders to revive the fatally injured man, the severity and placement of his wounds made it impossible to save him.
The surviving victim was rushed to Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon with cuts to his face and arms. Hospital officials later confirmed to CNN that his condition had stabilized and he was no longer in critical condition.
A U.S. State Department spokesperson told Fox News and CNN that the agency was aware of the incident and stands ready to provide consular assistance to those affected.

Authorities said the three suspects fled the scene in a vehicle following the attack. “We have circulated to all our officers the necessary information to find the suspects,” police said, according to Barron’s.
CNN later reported that all three suspects were detained and are being questioned. One is expected to face a homicide charge, while the other two may be charged with assault.
