Rep. Troy Nehls to Retire From Congress; Twin Brother Trever Launches Bid for Texas Seat

Rep. Troy Nehls, a three-term Republican representing Texas’ 22nd Congressional District, announced he will retire at the end of his current term—joining a growing list of GOP House members stepping aside ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

Nehls’ announcement

Nehls shared the news in a statement posted to social media, saying he made the decision after talking it over with his family during the holidays.

“After more than 30 years in law enforcement serving and protecting my community as a police officer, constable, Fort Bend County Sheriff, an Army veteran and six years representing this district in Congress, I have made the decision, after conversations with my beautiful bride and my girls over the holiday, to focus on my family and return home after this Congress,” Nehls wrote.

He also emphasized his loyalty to the president, noting that he personally informed Donald Trump before making the announcement.

A family successor enters the race

Soon after Nehls’ retirement announcement, his twin brother, Trever Nehls—a retired U.S. Army colonel and former Fort Bend County constable—said he will run for the open seat in the 22nd District.

Trever Nehls has previously served as a precinct constable and has run twice for other county offices. His campaign messaging and local coverage emphasize law-and-order priorities and veterans’ issues.

In a Facebook post, Trever praised his brother’s career and promised to build on his legacy.

“I want to thank my brother for his decades of service in the military and in law enforcement where we served together. Troy has always led with integrity, courage and a relentless commitment to public safety and he put our community first,” Trever wrote.

Trump’s early endorsement

Trump quickly endorsed Trever Nehls, highlighting the family’s support for his agenda and saying Trever would prioritize border security, back law enforcement, and support the Second Amendment if elected.

“In Congress, Trever will work hard to Keep our now very Secure Border, SECURE, Stop Migrant Crime, Grow our Economy, Cut Taxes and Regulations, Promote MADE IN THE U.S.A., Advance American Energy DOMINANCE, Champion Election Integrity, and Defend our always under siege Second Amendment,” Trump wrote.

More Republicans heading for the exits

Nehls’ decision comes as other notable Republicans also signal they’re leaving the House.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said she plans to depart in early January and has described a breakdown in her relationship with Trump following disputes over the release of documents connected to the Jeffrey Epstein investigations.

“I have too much self respect and dignity, love my family way too much, and do not want my sweet district to have to endure a hurtful and hateful primary against me by the president we all fought for, only to fight and win my election while Republicans will likely lose the midterms,” Greene wrote.

Rep. Don Bacon also confirmed he will not seek reelection, with his term running until January 2027. Bacon told Axios he nearly resigned early due to disagreements with Trump’s proposed peace plan involving Ukraine and Russia.
