Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez holds a razor-thin advantage over Vice President JD Vance in a hypothetical 2028 presidential contest, according to a new survey released Tuesday.

The Argument/Verasight poll shows the New York Democrat leading 51 percent to 49 percent. Because the result falls within the poll’s 2.7-point margin of error, the race is effectively a statistical tie. Respondents were asked who they would vote for if the election were between Ocasio-Cortez and Vance.

Neither has announced a bid for the White House, but both are frequently mentioned as potential standard-bearers for their parties in the next cycle—an early sign that a 2028 showdown could be closely fought if these two emerged as nominees.

What the poll found

The survey highlights sharp divides across key demographic groups:

  • White voters: 57 percent for Vance, 43 percent for Ocasio-Cortez
  • Black voters: 79 percent for Ocasio-Cortez
  • Hispanic voters: 64 percent for Ocasio-Cortez
  • Men: 54 percent for Vance
  • Women: 56 percent for Ocasio-Cortez
  • College-educated voters: 56 percent for Ocasio-Cortez, 44 percent for Vance

The poll also suggests some crossover support compared with the 2024 electorate. Eight percent of those who voted for President Donald Trump in 2024 said they would back Ocasio-Cortez in this matchup. Meanwhile, Vance was positioned to gain five percent of voters who supported former Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024.

The poll surveyed 1,521 registered voters from December 5 to 11, with a ±2.7 percentage point margin of error.

Where Ocasio-Cortez stands within the Democratic field

While Ocasio-Cortez performs competitively in this head-to-head, recent hypothetical Democratic primary polling has shown her trailing more established national figures such as Kamala Harris and former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg—suggesting she is not yet the clear favorite inside her party.

In another recent hypothetical test featuring California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Vance, and Ocasio-Cortez, Newsom led with 36 percent, while Vance and Ocasio-Cortez were tied at 34 percent each.

What key figures have said

Asked in October which Republicans might run in 2028, President Donald Trump referenced Vance among other potential contenders and praised the party’s bench.

Vance told Fox News host Sean Hannity earlier this month that he has thought about what a future moment could look like after the midterms, but said he tries to keep his focus on the job he was elected to do now.

What happens next

Major candidates are generally expected to hold off on launching 2028 campaigns until after the 2026 midterm elections, when the political landscape—and party dynamics—may look very different.
