BROOKLAND, Ark. – A mother in Arkansas has been sentenced to jail time and probation after admitting to giving marijuana products to her children, including edibles and vape pens.
Deanna Sue Woods, 36, was sentenced Wednesday to 120 days in jail, with 60 days credited for time already served, and five years (60 months) of supervised probation. She was also ordered to pay all associated court costs and fees.
Woods pleaded guilty to one count of introducing a controlled substance into the body of another person and one count of first-degree child endangerment.
According to police, Woods was arrested in January after an investigation revealed she had given marijuana/THC edibles to three of her four children, who range in age from 6 to 15 years old. Investigators say she also allowed her 6- and 10-year-old children to use her vape pen.
Detective Dustin Norwood of the Brookland Police Department said Woods admitted to giving or using marijuana around her children about a dozen times in the past year. She told officers she did it in hopes of discouraging them from using marijuana themselves.
Woods, who holds a valid medical marijuana card, also reportedly smoked marijuana while breastfeeding her 1-year-old.
As part of her plea agreement, Woods is barred from contacting her children unless allowed under the supervision and conditions of the Department of Human Services and the children’s legal guardian.
She is also required to complete parenting classes, undergo a substance abuse assessment, and enroll in a rehabilitation program.
