The bodies of a man and a woman were found in a San Antonio creek after a heavy rainstorm the night before.
The San Antonio Police Department told PEOPLE that an officer was called on Monday, Sept. 1, around 12:15 p.m. local time about a body in a nearby creek.
The officer went to Salado Creek and discovered a woman along the edge of the creek bed who appeared to have drowned, according to police.
During a further search downstream, officers learned that three homeless people had not been seen since the rainstorm on Sunday night, Aug. 31.
“Other officers and SAFD rescue located a second victim, a deceased male, nearby. The third individual was ultimately located, safely,” the San Antonio Police Department said.
At a news conference Monday, Police Chief William McManus said investigators believe both victims were swept into the water Sunday night or early Monday morning.
“We don’t know 100 percent what happened,” McManus said. “We won’t until we get further into the investigation. But that’s what appears to be right now.”
When asked about the victims’ relationship, McManus said they were believed to be friends and most likely from another location. He added that both appeared to be homeless.
The names of the victims have not yet been released.
Police confirmed that no one else was missing in the incident.
San Antonio received more than three inches of rain Sunday evening, according to Anthony Franze, a meteorologist with the San Antonio-Express News. That total came close to a daily record set on Aug. 31, 1892.
The National Weather Service for Austin and San Antonio said early Monday that a flood watch was in effect for parts of South Central Texas along and west of I-35 and along and north of U.S. 90 until noon.
The agency also warned that one to two more inches of rain were possible, which could lead to flash flooding.
