Ashley Biden, daughter of former President Joe Biden and former First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, has reportedly filed for divorce from her husband, Dr. Howard Krein, after 13 years of marriage.
According to The Philadelphia Inquirer, Ashley, 44, filed the paperwork on Monday, August 11, in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas. She and Krein, 58, married on June 2, 2012.
That same day, Ashley posted — then deleted — a photo on Instagram of herself walking in a park, giving a thumbs up while Beyoncé’s song Freedom played. She also shared a quote on Instagram that read: “New life, new beginnings means new boundaries. New ways of being that won’t look or sound like they did before,” set to Lauryn Hill’s Freedom Time.
Her spokesperson has not commented, and PEOPLE magazine has also reached out to Krein for a statement.
Ashley and Krein’s wedding took place at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Roman Catholic Church in Greenville, Delaware, blending her Catholic faith with his Jewish traditions. Around 200 guests joined the celebration at the Biden family’s lakeside home in Wilmington. At the time, Joe Biden was vice president and personally helped prepare the backyard for the reception.
Ashley and Krein met in 2010 through her brother, Beau Biden. They got engaged in October 2011 after Krein proposed during a sunset in Big Sur, California. Joe Biden once said about Krein, “This is the right guy. And he’s getting a hell of a woman.”

Ashley has kept a low public profile but made headlines in 2024 when she introduced her father at the Democratic National Convention, bringing him to tears. She recalled how, before walking her down the aisle in 2012, he told her he would “always be [her] best friend” — something she said is still true.
Krein was also with the Biden family in the Oval Office in 2024 when Joe Biden announced he would not run for re-election.
