Ashley Biden Praises Dad Joe Biden and Shares a Post About ‘Peace of Mind’ amid Divorce from Howard Krein

As Ashley Biden goes through a difficult time, she says she’s “so grateful” to have her dad, Joe Biden, by her side.

On Saturday, Aug. 30, Ashley — the daughter of Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden — shared photos from a hike with her father at Cape Henlopen State Park in Delaware. The post came less than three weeks after Ashley, 44, filed for divorce from her husband, Dr. Howard Krein.

Along with scenic shots of the park, Ashley posted a selfie with her dad on Instagram Stories. The two smiled as they walked outdoors, both wearing baseball caps and casual clothes.

“Chicken soup for my soul,” Ashley wrote with the photo. “I feel so grateful for our walks and talks. 🥇 Dad!”

Ashley, who has previously called her father her “best friend,” followed the post with another Instagram Story — a solo selfie with a sticker that read, “Peace of Mind.”

Ashley filed for divorce from Krein, a plastic surgeon, earlier this month after 13 years of marriage. They wed on June 2, 2012, in Wilmington, Delaware. According to The Philadelphia Inquirer, she filed the paperwork on Aug. 11 in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas.

That same day, she shared a photo of herself giving a thumbs-up while walking in a park, set to Beyoncé’s “Freedom.” She also reposted a quote that read: “New life, new beginnings means new boundaries. New ways of being that won’t look or sound like they did before,” paired with “Freedom Time” by Lauryn Hill.

Ashley and Krein began dating in 2010 after being introduced by Beau Biden, Ashley’s late brother. They got engaged in 2011 when Krein proposed at sunset on a cliff in Big Sur, California.

Joe Biden previously spoke to PEOPLE about Krein asking for his permission to marry Ashley. “This is the right guy,” he said at the time. “And he’s getting a helluva woman.”

Their 2012 wedding combined both Catholic and Jewish traditions at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Roman Catholic Church in Greenville, Delaware. Ahead of the ceremony, Joe admitted to PEOPLE that giving away his youngest child would be emotional.

“I kept telling Ash, we’ve got to open up the church and practice walking up and down the aisle so I can handle it,” he said then. Reflecting on seeing his daughter in a veil only once before, at her First Communion, he added: “I think to myself, aw, God, my little girl! This can’t have passed so quick.”
