A stabbing spree at a Walmart in Traverse City, Michigan, left at least 11 people hospitalized on Saturday, July 26. Authorities say the attack appeared to be random.
According to the Grand Traverse Sheriff’s Office (GTSO), the suspect—identified only as a 42-year-old man—was apprehended shortly after the attack began. A responding deputy was reportedly on the scene within minutes.
Police say the man used a folding knife to stab multiple people inside the store.
“It appears that these were all random acts,” Sheriff Michael Shea said during a press conference, adding that investigators have found no evidence of additional suspects or accomplices.
The victims, ranging in age and gender—six men and five women—were transported to Munson Medical Center. As of Saturday night, five remain in serious condition, while six are listed as critical, according to Munson Healthcare.
Authorities praised the quick response of bystanders and Walmart staff, some of whom helped treat victims or assisted in restraining the suspect.
“Violence like this is unacceptable,” a Walmart spokesperson said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with those who were injured, and we’re grateful for the swift action taken by first responders. We’re fully cooperating with law enforcement during the investigation.”
The Grand Traverse Sheriff’s Office also issued a message of support for the victims and their families, writing, “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their loved ones.”
The suspect remains in custody as investigators work to determine a motive.
