A deadly mass shooting at a bustling food market in Bangkok, Thailand, left at least five people dead and two others injured on Monday, July 28, according to multiple local reports.

The violence unfolded just after 12:30 p.m. local time at the Or Tor Kor Market, a popular shopping destination near Bangkok’s famed Chatuchak Market. Authorities say the shooter, later identified as a 61-year-old man, opened fire inside the market before being found dead nearby on a bench, reportedly from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Among the victims were three security guards and a female vendor. Two additional women sustained injuries and were rushed to Phyathai Phahol Hospital for treatment, according to reporting from the Bangkok Post, The Nation, and Thairath.

The suspect, dressed in a black T-shirt and camouflage shorts and carrying a rucksack, was found dead shortly after the shooting ended. Police have not publicly identified him, but say he previously worked at the market as a security guard. According to reports, he had a history of conflict with a colleague and had once been in a relationship with a market vendor.

“Police are investigating the motive. So far, it’s a mass shooting,” said Worapat Sukthai, deputy police chief of Bangkok’s Bang Sue district, in a statement to AFP.

Initial investigations suggest the motive may have been personal, though the incident occurred near a designated aid collection point for victims of the Thai-Cambodian border conflict, raising further questions.

Authorities cordoned off the area and urged the public to avoid the scene while police interviewed market vendors and stall owners. As of Monday evening, the investigation remains ongoing, and no further threat to the public has been reported.

The tragic event adds to growing concerns over public safety in Thailand, a country that has seen an increase in high-profile mass violence in recent years.

Thai police have not yet issued an official statement but are expected to provide updates as the investigation progresses.
