Comedian Bill Maher said the fatal shooting of a Minneapolis woman by a federal agent was “terrible” and never should have happened — but he also ridiculed celebrities who wore a pin referencing the incident at the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday.

Several high-profile attendees, including Mark Ruffalo and Wanda Sykes, wore pins reading “Be Good,” a tribute to Renee Good. Others used the nationally televised ceremony to make political statements. Speaking with USA Today on the red carpet, Maher laughed at the idea of turning the event into an activist moment.

“We’re just here for show business today,” he said. “You know, it was a terrible thing that happened, and it shouldn’t have happened, and if they didn’t act like such thugs, it wouldn’t have had to happen. But I don’t need to wear a pin about it.”

Sykes later took a dig at Maher while presenting the award for Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television, telling him, “You give us so much. But I would love a little less. Just try less.”

Maher didn’t appear amused when the broadcast cut to him for a reaction. The award ultimately went to Ricky Gervais, whom Sykes also mocked for past jokes about transgenderism.

The shooting has sparked intense backlash toward the Trump administration and condemnation of the agents’ actions. Federal officials have argued the agent acted in self-defense and described the incident as domestic terrorism. Democratic officials have disputed the self-defense claim and said the killing was unjustified.

Officials also said the agent who fired had previously been dragged and injured by a fleeing driver in a separate incident last year. Authorities allege Good had been following and harassing federal officers earlier in the day. Video footage showed her interacting with the agent shortly before the shooting, including moments in which her wife taunted him.

Good was also described as a Minneapolis-based immigration activist and a member of “ICE Watch,” according to federal sources quoted by Fox News.

Homeland Security sources told Fox News the group seeks to monitor, track, interfere with, and oppose federal immigration enforcement operations, and that it is active in multiple sanctuary cities across the country.
