A Fourth of July celebration on Lake Lanier turned dangerous Friday evening when a boat exploded near Landshark Cove, injuring seven people, including a child.
The explosion occurred around 7 p.m. just off Lanier Islands Parkway, near Margaritaville, according to Hall County Fire Rescue and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The boat involved was a 23-foot cabin cruiser that was being towed at the time of the blast. The exact cause of the explosion remains under investigation.
When first responders arrived, flames were reportedly shooting five feet into the air. Fortunately, a Hall County Marine Unit was already nearby and witnessed the explosion, allowing them to respond within minutes. A 911 call was also placed from the scene.
“The operator towing the boat rescued all seven individuals and brought them to waiting paramedics at Margaritaville,” the DNR said in a statement.
Five of the injured, including a child with serious injuries, were transported to local hospitals. The child was airlifted to receive immediate care. The other two victims were treated at the scene.
Hall County Fire Rescue spokesperson Kimberlie Ledsinger said, “Upon arrival, the rescue boat crew discovered a vessel engulfed in flames and five patients needing immediate care.”
Officials said all victims were in stable condition as they left the scene. The injured ranged in age from 5 to 45 and suffered second- and third-degree burns.
Authorities continue to investigate what caused the explosion.
