A man has turned to Reddit for advice after feeling uncomfortable with his girlfriend’s plans to wear a couples costume with a male coworker.
The 28-year-old explained in his post that his relationship has been loving and serious. “I love my girlfriend and would marry this woman, and she’s felt the same way,” he wrote, noting that despite a few ups and downs, he truly sees a future with her.
The problem, he said, involves one coworker he calls Spencer. “Spencer is super social, single, and always has something going on — invites the office to things, whatever,” he shared.
Initially, his girlfriend didn’t like Spencer, but their dynamic changed over time. “My girlfriend and her coworkers hated him at first, but now they’re all close — even though they still love talking s— about him,” he said.
He insisted that he isn’t controlling about his girlfriend’s friendships with men, but something about Spencer made him uneasy. “This guy rubbed me the wrong way because he said something to her that she took as stupid humor, but I saw it as flirting,” he recalled.
Despite his discomfort, his girlfriend and Spencer became closer. “He is always asking my girlfriend specifically to hang out with him and his friends,” he wrote, adding that she often joined them, sometimes bringing another female friend along.
Eventually, things escalated when she began hiding these hangouts. “It got to the point where she stopped telling me she was hanging out with him, saying she was with her friends instead. I’d find out through others spotting her or through social media,” he explained.

Although she was rarely alone with Spencer, the secrecy damaged their relationship. “The sneaking around happened multiple times. She knew how I felt, but she’d dismiss my concerns and call me insecure,” he said.
The mistrust led to a breakup. Later, his girlfriend apologized, admitting she had been wrong. “She said she didn’t mean to hurt me and thought hiding it would avoid a fight. She promised to respect my boundaries moving forward,” he wrote.
He decided to give her another chance. “We got back together, and it’s been months since then. Nothing like that has happened again, and things have been good,” he said.
However, a new issue recently surfaced. His girlfriend’s office is hosting a costume party, and she wants to go as part of a two-person horse costume with Spencer. “They’d be connected all day and at the after-party, and I think this is wildly inappropriate given everything that’s happened,” he admitted.
Asking Reddit whether he was wrong to feel uneasy, he wrote, “So AITAH?”
One commenter summarized what many others echoed: “It doesn’t feel appropriate to me — but you and your girlfriend have far bigger problems than a Halloween costume.”
After reading through the responses, the man said the feedback was difficult but revealing. “It was rough to read, but I needed it. Guess I was blinded by love,” he admitted.

He ultimately concluded that getting back together may have been a mistake. “I’ve accepted that I’m the a–hole for taking her back. Even if she respects my boundary now, I don’t think I’ll ever get over the sneaking around,” he wrote.
In the end, he made peace with his decision. “I deserve someone who doesn’t pull this kind of thing, so thank you, everyone,” he said.
