A trial is underway in Virginia for a man accused of killing his girlfriend and then claiming she took her own life.
Huy Nguyen faces a second-degree murder charge in connection with the death of Alison “Kate” Laporta in 2024.
The case began on April 18, 2024, when officers were called to Mount Vernon Hospital around 11:35 p.m. Laporta had a gunshot wound to her upper body and had been brought to the hospital by Nguyen, according to the Fairfax County Police Department. She was later transferred to Fairfax Hospital, where she died.
Police said Nguyen “initially told officers the shooting occurred in a parking lot,” but detectives later found that was not true. They determined Nguyen shot Laporta inside a vehicle and then drove her to the hospital.
The weapon used in the killing was later found near Nguyen’s home in Lorton.

A witness at Nguyen’s trial said they heard him, who had been at a bar with Laporta earlier that night, say: “The only way this argument ends is with a bullet,” according to NBC4.
Another witness testified Nguyen allegedly said: “I’m going to shoot this girl.”
Prosecutors said the fatal bullet was found in the backseat of the vehicle. Nguyen’s lawyers argued there was no evidence he was the shooter and claimed Laporta shot herself.
During the trial, the defense also shared hundreds of pages of medical records from two years before Laporta’s death, when she reportedly had a mental health issue, NBC4 reported.
A GoFundMe page described Laporta as a “strong and loving mom” who “worked as a dedicated Safeway employee for over six years, starting as a cashier and moving up to management.”
The fundraiser said, “Those fortunate enough to have known Kate understand the immense loss of a kind and loving mother, and we are all holding Kate and her two children in our prayers.”
