A bride-to-be turned to Reddit for guidance after a wedding decision resurfaced long-buried tensions with her family.

In her post, she shared that her father died when she was 8 years old. When her mother remarried at 13, she never saw her stepfather, Steve, as anything more than her mom’s husband — despite his hopes of becoming a second father to her.

Her mother insisted that she “needed a dad” and continually encouraged her to rely on Steve in that role. But the more they pushed, the more she emotionally withdrew. Even after her younger half-siblings were born, nothing changed for her.

At 19, a confrontation finally settled things — at least from her perspective. Steve was upset she hadn’t spent Father’s Day with them, leading her to clearly state that she did not and would never view him as a father. They backed off after that, though her mother never accepted her feelings.

Years passed without conflict, so the bride-to-be assumed her boundaries were understood. When planning her wedding, she chose her paternal grandparents to walk her down the aisle, describing them as the closest remaining connection to her father and an unwavering support system.

However, when her mom and stepfather discovered the decision on social media, they felt blindsided. Her mother insisted she should have asked Steve if he was okay with it, claiming it was only natural to assume he would take on the father-of-the-bride role.

The bride-to-be was frustrated and confused by their reaction. After nearly a decade of respecting her boundaries, she couldn’t understand why they still expected her relationship with Steve to change — especially for such a personal moment.

When she tried to explain, her mother accused her of being petty and “looking for reasons to make them the bad guys.”

Reddit commenters overwhelmingly supported her stance, pointing out that she had communicated her feelings clearly for years. One user wrote, “You made your relationship with Steve VERY CLEAR for YEARS.” Another added, “There should have been no expectation from them that he’d walk you down the aisle.”
