Bryan Kohberger filed two complaints within his first two days at the Idaho Maximum Security Institution’s J-Block.

On July 30, he requested to be transferred to a different section of the prison. The next day, he accused staff of withholding food.

“I have on several occasions not received all items of food on my tray,” Kohberger wrote in a handwritten complaint dated July 31, obtained by PEOPLE and first reported by the Idaho Statesman.

He claimed that when he raised the issue during meal service, his requests for replacements were ignored and no one followed up with the kitchen.

Kohberger, a strict vegan, is entitled to a vegan alternative provided by the Idaho Department of Corrections (IDOC) at each meal. In his complaint, he cited prison policy: “The policy book confirms items missing which are pointed out during service will be replaced.” He added, “I wish to, without exception, receive these replacements,” and concluded, “The nutritional standard is not being upheld unless I receive my full tray.”

Since entering IDOC custody three weeks ago, Kohberger has submitted five formal complaints. One claimed that he was sexually harassed and threatened by other inmates. He alleged that one person told him, “I’ll b— f— you,” while another remarked, “the only a– we’ll be eating is Kohberger’s.”

A guard later confirmed hearing vulgar comments directed at Kohberger around that time but said he could not identify the individuals responsible. Prison officials closed the complaint. An IDOC spokesperson did not respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

After Kohberger’s first transfer request, a prison official noted that the J-block is “generally a fairly calm and quieter tier.”

Kohberger was sentenced to four consecutive life terms in prison for murdering four University of Idaho students: Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin.

The victims were found fatally stabbed on November 13, 2022, at their off-campus home in Moscow, Idaho. Investigators have yet to determine Kohberger’s motive or his connection to the students.
