Bryan Kohberger managed to stay under the radar while awaiting trial for multiple murders, despite being the most high-profile inmate at the Latah County Jail.
That insight comes from a report filed by Cpl. Brett Payne of the Moscow Police Department, who interviewed another inmate that shared a cell with Kohberger. According to the report, the inmate described Kohberger as having a few “annoying” habits but said he never saw any displays of aggression—except for one particular incident.
He noted that Kohberger was “highly intelligent and polite,” though he never once spoke about the killings he would later confess to in court. Interestingly, Kohberger would frequently ask others about the crimes that had landed them behind bars.
One of the more difficult behaviors to live with, the inmate said, was Kohberger’s hygiene routine. He claimed Kohberger would spend 45 minutes to an hour in the shower and washed his hands “dozens of times” a day.
According to the inmate, Kohberger spent nearly as much time showering as he did sleeping. He was often “awake all night” and constantly moving around the cell.
The only time the inmate saw Kohberger lose his temper was during a misunderstanding. While Kohberger was on the phone with his mother, he believed another inmate had insulted him. In reality, the man had been watching a sports game and yelled “you suck” at the TV. Kohberger “aggressively” confronted the individual, asking whether the comment was meant for him and his mother.
The misunderstanding was cleared up quickly after the two spoke, according to the report.
Kohberger is now in the custody of the Idaho Department of Corrections as he awaits final prison placement.
