A Los Angeles-area firefighter paramedic is accused of killing his wife after authorities say a domestic dispute turned deadly.
The Los Angeles Police Department said a man asked officers to conduct a welfare check on his wife at their home in North Hollywood. When officers arrived, they found a woman dead inside the residence.
Police identified the victim as Mayra Jimenez, 55, and said she suffered blunt force trauma. Her husband, Andrew Jimenez, 45, was named as the suspect, according to the LAPD.
“[The] investigation revealed that the victim and suspect were in a marital relationship and that this was an incident of domestic violence,” the department said in a press release.
Multiple local outlets reported that Andrew Jimenez is a firefighter paramedic with the Glendale Fire Department. Police said he was booked on suspicion of murder and is being held on $2 million bail. It was not immediately clear whether formal charges have been filed.
One outlet reported investigators believe Mayra was allegedly beaten to death with an axe.
In statements reported by KTLA and KABC, Andrew Jimenez’s attorney pointed to a possible affair, saying the defense has been in contact with law enforcement about a diary allegedly read shortly before the killing that the attorney claims indicated infidelity.
The Glendale Fire Department, where Andrew Jimenez has worked since 2008, said he has been placed on administrative leave and relieved of duty, according to the reports.
KTLA also reported that Mayra Jimenez previously served as a union representative for United Teachers Los Angeles.
