Before the death of political activist Charlie Kirk, his parents had largely stayed out of the public eye.

Kirk rose to prominence after founding Turning Point USA, an organization dedicated to “identifying, educating, training, and organizing students to promote the principles of fiscal responsibility, free markets, and limited government,” according to its website. In recent years, he toured college campuses across the country as part of the group’s American Comeback Tour.

On September 10, while speaking to students at Utah Valley University about gun violence during one of these events, Kirk was fatally shot. Former President Donald Trump confirmed his death on Truth Social shortly after the incident.

A Turning Point USA spokesperson released a statement following the tragedy, asking supporters to keep Kirk’s family in their prayers. The suspected shooter, Tyler Robinson, was later apprehended after an extensive manhunt.

Eleven days later, family, friends, and supporters gathered at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, for Kirk’s funeral on September 21. His parents, who had kept a low profile, were also present when Trump awarded their late son a posthumous Presidential Medal of Freedom at the White House on October 14, as noted by Senator Marsha Blackburn on Instagram.

Here’s what is known about Charlie Kirk’s parents and their lives before and after their son’s passing.

They Raised Him in Illinois

Kirk was born in Arlington Heights, a suburb of Chicago, on October 14, 1993, and was raised in nearby Prospect Heights, according to NBC News.

He attended Wheeling High School, where he participated in various activities including the Eagle Scout Association, the marching band, and sports like football and basketball. Following his death, Arlington Heights Mayor Jim Tinaglia issued a statement noting that Kirk had “deep ties to our community.”

His Mother Was a Mental Health Counselor, and His Father Was an Architect

While Kirk became a national political figure, his parents pursued more conventional careers. His mother worked as a mental health counselor, while his father was an architect whose firm contributed to the design of Trump Tower in New York City, NBC News reported.

Unlike their son, both parents maintained a private life and largely avoided media attention.

They Raised Him in a Politically Moderate Household

Though Kirk became one of the most recognizable conservative activists in the U.S., he grew up in a politically moderate family, according to The Guardian.

As a teenager, Kirk began listening to conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh and became increasingly engaged in politics. In high school, he even organized a protest over cafeteria food prices.

Kirk’s political activism deepened after he left Harper College, a community college in Palatine, Illinois. He went on to launch The Charlie Kirk Show, author several political books, and expand Turning Point USA into a nationwide organization. He also developed a close alliance with Donald Trump, delivering a speech at the former president’s January 2025 inauguration.

They Are Grandparents

Kirk’s parents became grandparents on August 23, 2022, when he and his wife, Erika, welcomed their first child. The couple celebrated the arrival of their second child, a son, in May 2024.

Despite these milestones, Kirk’s parents have continued to maintain their privacy and have not spoken publicly about their family life.
