Claire Danes is opening up about the emotional complexity she felt when she learned she was pregnant in her mid-40s.
Speaking on the Smartless podcast with Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett on Nov. 17, the actress — now 46 — shared that she never expected to become pregnant again at 44. She and her husband, Hugh Dancy, are parents to three children: Cyrus, 12, Rowan, 7, and a 2-year-old daughter whose name they have chosen to keep private.
“I was so old when that happened. I was 44,” Danes said, adding that she “didn’t think it was possible” at that age.
Danes admitted she initially felt embarrassed and unsure how to process the news — both because of social expectations around age and because the pregnancy wasn’t planned.
“I did not foresee this at all. And it was weird. Suddenly, I felt like a funny shame,” she explained. “I was naughty. I had been caught fornicating past the point I was meant to. … It was like I found an edge that I hadn’t been quite conscious of — like I was going outside of the parameters a little bit.”
Danes and Dancy welcomed Cyrus in 2012, followed by Rowan in 2017, and their daughter in July 2023.
“It’s a trip. I mean, I have a teenager and a toddler at once,” she said with a laugh.

Because she had already given birth to two boys, Danes assumed her third child would also be a boy. So learning she was carrying a girl came as a joyful surprise.
“My OB-GYN was like, ‘You know you’re having another boy.’ But no!” she recalled. While she would have been happy to welcome another son, she said she is “more delighted” to now have a daughter.
Danes and Dancy first met while playing love interests in the 2006 film Evening. She later shared that their connection developed during a scenic autumn in Rhode Island — and one day while biking together, she realized she was simply “really just happy.” The couple married in 2009.
Danes currently stars in Netflix’s thriller The Beast in Me, which debuted on Nov. 13.
