A teenager turned to Reddit for advice after a painful argument with her father about her childhood bedroom. The 18-year-old freshman said she was shocked when, just before leaving for college, her dad shared news that left her upset.

She explained, “My dad (40M) told me the day before I left that he was going to pack up my stuff. He said, ‘Don’t be offended if I pack up your things and turn it into a guest room.’ ” The teen said she broke down crying as soon as she heard it.

According to her, the situation got worse when her father defended his choice. “He started asking how I didn’t know this and said I should’ve expected this because every family does this when their child goes to college,” she wrote.

The teen said she never thought this would happen, insisting her dad had only joked about it in the past. “He never seriously talked to me about it or asked me if I wanted this,” she added.

What hurt most, she said, was how much the decision shaped her own college plans. “He assumed I did because I was getting a dorm, but if I knew he was going to pack up my things and get rid of my room I wouldn’t have gone to this college.”

For her, starting college wasn’t supposed to feel like leaving home forever. “This is my first year of college and I had always thought of it as like a boarding school type situation. I never thought that it was like moving out completely.”

The change left her feeling depressed and rejected. “I feel really depressed about this and I feel as if I’m being kicked out, but I’m not sure if I’m just being dramatic or not.” She compared her experience with classmates and found none of them had gone through the same thing. “Is this normal?” she asked.

A few weeks later, she tried again to understand her father’s point of view. “I texted my dad two weeks after moving and told him that I talked to my friends and that it wasn’t normal and I was confused on why he was doing this.” His short reply — “You’ll always have a home here” — didn’t match what she saw when she visited: her belongings packed in boxes.

Her post ended with a heartfelt question to the Reddit community: “AITA for being angry at him?”

Many commenters quickly supported her. One wrote, “Tbh, it sounds like your dad didn’t communicate this well with you at all. It isn’t a universal rule that parents clear out their kid’s room once they hit college, it varies from fam to fam.”

Another encouraged her to open up about her feelings, reminding her that a dorm is only temporary and doesn’t replace home.

Others were harsher, saying her dad treated her like “a guest in your own home” and stressing that “a dorm isn’t a home. It’s a place you stay when class is in session.”

As the responses poured in, many understood why the teen was so deeply hurt. Her bedroom wasn’t just a space — it was her safe place. Losing it without warning made her feel unwelcome in the one home she thought would always be hers.
