A Maryland corrections officer was killed in a single-vehicle crash on New Year’s Eve, just hours after celebrating the conclusion of a decades-long career with colleagues.
The Prince George’s County Department of Corrections confirmed the death of Master Corporal John Raymond Nicholson, who was 57 years old. He died on Dec. 31, 2025 — the same day he officially retired from the department.
“MCpl. Nicholson started his career on June 18, 2001, and retired December 31, 2025,” the department said in a statement. “A retirement celebration was held for him at the facility on Wednesday where some of our retirees came back to see him off.”
The gathering marked what was intended to be a joyful milestone after more than two decades of service.
Affectionately known as “Big Nic,” Nicholson worked in multiple areas throughout the correctional facility during his career. His most recent assignment was in reception, where he was often the first person people encountered upon entering.

“He greeted everyone as they entered the facility, usually bringing smiles to people’s faces to start the day,” the department said.
A resident of Laurel, Maryland, Nicholson earned several honors during his service, including a Valor Award for his work on the Emergency Response Team.
“Many people don’t get to receive their ‘flowers’ while they can still smell them,” the department added. “Although his passing was hours after his retirement, DOC was able to give Big Nic his well-deserved flowers. MCpl. Nicholson will be missed, but he will not be forgotten.”
According to the Anne Arundel County Police Department, officers responded to a crash at approximately 7:40 p.m. on Dec. 31 in the area of Crain Highway North and Defense Highway in Crofton.
Police said a 2020 Dodge pickup truck left the roadway and struck a pole in the center lane before coming to rest. Nicholson, who was identified as the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene by the fire department. The Traffic Safety Crash Team responded to investigate the incident.
News of Nicholson’s death prompted an outpouring of condolences on the Department of Corrections’ Facebook post.

Others expressed sympathy despite not knowing Nicholson personally. “I do not know this gentleman, but just reading this story brings great sadness to my heart,” one comment read. “Prayers and my deepest condolences to his family.”
“Rest in peace my friend, it’s still hard to believe,” another added.
