A newlywed couple in the United Kingdom says they were left “devastated” after a mix-up at their wedding venue led to the loss of their custom-made cake.

One of the spouses shared the story on Reddit on Aug. 17, asking members of a wedding “drama” subreddit whether they were overreacting to the situation.

The couple described their wedding as a joyful day with guests traveling from around the world. The celebration included a “special” cake inspired by their “home culture,” though they didn’t specify which culture. The 14-pound creation was intended to be a centerpiece of the reception.

Despite its significance, the couple never had a chance to enjoy it beyond the initial photo session. “There was only one layer,” they explained, noting it wasn’t a traditional tiered cake. “We took a photo op but at that point people then all moved off to another room for the party. That was the last we saw of our cake.”

The couple assumed they would enjoy the leftovers later, but that hope quickly disappeared. When they returned home the following day, they discovered the venue had mistakenly given them the wrong cake.

“It took a few days to get a clear answer, but they told us they threw it out by mistake,” the Reddit post explained. “Obviously, we were devastated, but it was just human error.”

The situation became more frustrating when the venue offered only partial compensation. According to the post, the staff agreed to reimburse half the cost of the cake, reasoning that some slices had been served. However, the newlyweds argued that the majority of it had gone to waste.

“Honestly, we were expecting a full refund at the very least,” the post read. “It’s not about the money, but I’m really shocked with how they handled it. We would have been happy with a reimbursement and maybe a complimentary night stay, but we won’t be returning there in the future.”

The couple ended their post by asking, “Am I exaggerating? Should I let it go?” Responses were divided. Many Reddit users encouraged them to demand a full refund or consider legal action, while others suggested the pair accept the partial payment and move on.

Some commenters raised an additional concern: if the couple received the wrong cake, then another bridal party may have been left without theirs. As one user put it, “The wrong cake they gave you… was that someone else’s cake??? Where’d they get a different cake from?!”
