What began as a casual Facebook entry ended in a public exchange of vows for an Iowa couple who pulled off a full-scale wedding in just 72 hours.

Keenan and Sydney Kilpatrick were wed Saturday, March 14, at the center of Marion’s annual “Wee Parade,” a local St. Patrick’s Day tradition that introduced a high-stakes “free wedding” giveaway for its 2026 festivities. The couple, who had been engaged since last fall, transitioned from long-term planning to a marriage license in a matter of days after being selected from a pool of 18 hopeful pairs.

A 72-Hour Sprint to the Altar

The Kilpatricks’ path to the altar accelerated rapidly on Wednesday, when organizers notified them they had won the inaugural contest. According to local reporting from KCRG, the couple faced an immediate ultimatum: prepare for a public ceremony by Saturday or forfeit the opportunity.

“We were absolutely shocked,” Keenan Kilpatrick told reporters, describing the moment of notification. “Kind of lost for words. We were like, ‘Do we actually do it?’ Then we were like, ‘We’d love to.'”

The compressed timeline required the couple to finalize attire, logistics, and legalities in three days—a process that typically takes months for standard ceremonies.

The Selection Process

The wedding giveaway was a new strategic addition to the Wee Parade, aimed at increasing community engagement through social media. Organizers utilized Facebook to solicit entries, eventually narrowing 18 local couples down to the Kilpatricks.

While the couple had previously intended to take their time with wedding arrangements, the suddenness of the contest win shifted their priorities.

“They found out on Wednesday, and here we are on Saturday,” said Kris Berry, a friend of the couple who witnessed the ceremony. “They got married that fast. This opportunity popped up, and they took it.”

Ceremony Highlights and Festive Integration

The nuptials were integrated into the parade route, blending traditional wedding aesthetics with St. Patrick’s Day themes:

  • Attire: Keenan Kilpatrick wore a dark suit accented with a green bowtie and top hat; Sydney Kilpatrick wore a classic white strapless gown and veil.
  • Visuals: The bride’s bouquet featured heavy greenery to match the holiday theme.
  • The Crowd: Hundreds of parade-goers served as impromptu wedding guests, waving Irish flags and cheering as the couple exchanged vows.

The Aftermath

Following the ceremony, the newly-married Kilpatricks expressed no regrets regarding the spontaneous nature of the event. Sydney Kilpatrick characterized the experience as “spontaneous” and described the couple as “feeling lucky” to have circumvented the traditional stresses of wedding planning.

The success of the event marks a potential shift for Marion’s holiday programming, as city organizers look for ways to modernize local traditions through interactive, high-visibility contests.
