A 21-year-old woman says she’s at odds with her mother after she brought a lost puppy home — and is now wondering if she crossed a line.
In a post on Reddit’s “Am I the A——?” forum, the woman explained that she was driving home from work around midnight when she spotted a puppy sitting in the middle of the road near her mom’s house. The area was dark, residential, and low-visibility. The dog was wearing a harness, which made her think it belonged to someone.
She brought the puppy home, though she noticed her mom was “a little annoyed” about the unexpected guest.

The next step, she said, was trying to find the owner as quickly as possible. She posted in local Facebook groups and assumed someone would claim the dog quickly. The following morning, she took the puppy to a vet to check for a microchip, but there wasn’t one. Despite her outreach, no one came forward to identify the dog.
The puppy ended up staying at the house for five days until someone else eventually took her in and gave her a permanent home.
But even after the situation was resolved, the woman said her mother continued to criticize her choice. According to the post, her mom told her not to bring more animals into the house and said she shouldn’t have brought the puppy home unless she could immediately return it to its owners. The mom also described her daughter’s decision as inconsiderate because the woman is living under her roof.

The daughter turned to Reddit to ask whether she was wrong for bringing a dog into someone else’s home without warning while staying there temporarily.
Responses were mixed. One commenter said the situation ended safely and suggested the daughter apologize and move on. Another agreed that it was her mother’s house and she should have asked first — but also pointed out that the daughter acted compassionately and the mother didn’t object strongly in the moment.
