A child died in a four-vehicle crash in Loveland, Colorado, on Tuesday, Dec. 16, according to a Colorado State Patrol (CSP) news release obtained by the publication.
The crash happened around 12:30 p.m. local time on the northbound lanes of I-25, CSP said. A box truck, a 2018 Lexus GX, a 2022 Kia Telluride and a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado towing a trailer were involved.
Investigators described the collision as a “secondary crash” that occurred after a medical emergency led one vehicle to pull over to the shoulder to receive emergency medical attention.
The child, who was riding in the Lexus, was pronounced dead at the scene. Three other occupants of that vehicle — another child and two adults — were taken to a local hospital.
CSP said the box truck driver is being assessed for injuries. The occupants of the Kia and the pickup truck reportedly were not hurt. Authorities have not released the identities of anyone involved.
The CSP Vehicular Crimes Unit is investigating.
After the crash, the northbound lanes of I-25 at mile marker 259 near Crossroads Boulevard were expected to remain closed for an extended period, CSP said. Motorists were being detoured off I-25 onto Crossroads Boulevard, and an estimated reopening time was not provided.
