A Texas deputy was hospitalized after being struck by a vehicle and thrown off an overpass while investigating a crash in Dallas County.

According to a Facebook post from the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office on Monday, Oct. 27, deputies had “responded to a vehicle crash when another vehicle struck them at the scene.” The department confirmed that the deputy remains hospitalized and is continuing to recover.

The incident occurred around 3 a.m. local time on Saturday, Oct. 25, when the deputy’s patrol car was hit by a Ford F-150, according to reports from KTVT, WDAF, and WFAA. The deputy was standing between his parked squad car and the bridge railing while investigating an earlier crash involving a Tesla. The impact threw him off the overpass, where he landed on Harry Hines Boulevard below. He sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a hospital.

The Tesla driver, who was detained in the deputy’s vehicle at the time of the collision, was also injured and taken to the hospital but was later released. Authorities have not specified why that driver had been detained.

Officials said the Ford F-150 driver was not impaired and will not face charges.

In their Facebook statement, the sheriff’s office also noted that a separate collision occurred shortly after, when another deputy “hydroplaned on the wet roadway” and crashed. The second incident happened on northbound I-35 near Reunion Boulevard, minutes after the initial crash, due to slick road conditions, according to WDAF and KTVT.

Authorities confirmed that the second deputy was “treated and released from the hospital.” The department added, “Please help us respect the involved deputies’ privacy and keep them in everyone’s prayers.”
